How to Understand the Kavach Stotram

The Kavach Stotram is a traditional preliminary hymn associated with the Durga Saptashati / Devi Mahatmya. “Kavach” refers to a pin, wedge or restraint, and the text describes the traditional idea of removing that restraint before the Saptashati recitation.

Textual Tradition

Devi Kavach, also called Shri Chandi Kavach, belongs to the Durga Saptashati tradition associated with the Markandeya Purana. At the beginning, Sage Markandeya asks Brahma to reveal the supremely secret means that gives protection, and Brahma answers by teaching the sacred Kavach of the Goddess. Therefore this page identifies Markandeya as the speaker/narrative voice rather than simply calling him the modern “author”; the dialogue is between Markandeya and Brahma. The Viniyoga names Brahma as the Rishi, Anushtubh as the metre and Chamunda as the deity.

The Kavach Stotram belongs to the traditional recitation sequence of the Shri Durga Saptashati. Gita Press, Gorakhpur publishes the Durga Saptashati with Kavach as part of the recitation framework. The viniyoga presented here names Shiva as the rishi, Anushtubh as the metre and Mahasaraswati as the deity.

Why and how? Markandeya asks Brahma for the supremely secret means that protects people. Brahma replies that the Goddess's sacred Kavach is most secret and beneficial to all beings, and then teaches it.

Tradition, Context & Significance

Textual tradition: The Kavach is associated with the Markandeya Purana. Its own opening makes the dialogue explicit: “Markandeya said,” followed by “Brahma said.” Markandeya asks the question and Brahma reveals the Goddess's Kavach. For that reason, this page presents it as a Markandeya–Brahma dialogue within the Markandeya Purana tradition rather than simply labeling Markandeya as a modern-style author.

What tradition does it belong to? Devi Kavacham, also called Shri Chandika Kavach, is a major part of the traditional recitation framework of the Shri Durga Saptashati. The Gita Press, Gorakhpur edition presents the Kavach along with Hindi meaning and recitation guidance.

The idea of the Kavach: The hymn invokes many forms of the Goddess for protection of the directions, the body and different aspects of life.
